Abstract

The more recent literature reports an incidence of melanoma growing up to 4% a year in the general population. Surgery remains the best hpo for cure and it's efficacy is associated with associated with neoplasm depth and timing of the procedure. The records of 159 consecutive patients submitted to surgical treatment at the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre from 1973 to 1990 were revewed. Data were collected regarding: localiza tion, macroscopic aspects, presence of the primary lesion and the presence of lymphatic and sistemic metastasis. Patients were staged in accordance with the criteria recommended by the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC). There was no sex prevalence but most of the patients were caucasians. Mean age was 47,6 (± 17,5) years. Factor (hat commonly are related to a bad prognosis were identified in a great number of patients: 51,4% of the neo plasms were classified as stage III or IV, 32,2% were Clark V, in 68,5% the neoplasm depth was greater than 1,5 mm 46,5% had nodular aspect. The lymphatic drainage site was not identified in 30,8% of the cases. Lymphadenectomy was considered therapeutic in 72,6% of the cases and elective in 27,4%. In this particular group of patients refered to Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre a high prevalence of factors related to bad prognosis was observed. The earlier diagnosis must be the reached by the promotion of educational programs for medical and general public and by the facilitation on the medical access.
