Abstract

Since the first human retrovirus (HLTL-I) has been isolated from cultured T-cell cutaneous lymphoma and has been associated with adult T-cell Ieukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) much progress has been obtained regarding epidemiological and molecular studies of this disease. Seroepidemiological surveys have been performed in several countries around the world and as far as we know HTL V-l is the causative agent of ATLL and tropical spastic paraparesis of HTLV-I associated myelopathy (TSP/HAM). ATLL have clusters of incidence regard geographical areas and the disease occurs in the mid to late lífe. The aim of this report was to describe 21 cases of this disease diagnosed In Rio de Janeiro, and to review focuses on recent advances on characterization of ATLL. The disease may be misdiagnosed as cutaneous T-cell lymphoma or T-peripheral leukemia/lymphoma.
