Between January, 1986 and December, 1987, 525 breast cytopunctions by capilarity were done in lhe Unit of Mastology at lhe Hospital Distrital de Brasília and at lhe Hospital Docente Assistencial de Brasilia. Among those, 243 had hislopathological diagnoses from the drill biopsies (forage biopsies) and/or surgery specimen. The technique used consisted of a punction in lhe suspected area of lump location with a needie of calibre 25x 0,6 mm 0r25x 0,7 mm in several directions in order to obtain material by capilarity without aspiration. Amoung the 243 cases with histopathological confirmation there were insuficient material in 29 (12%) cases, leaving 214 satisfactories cases for diagnoses. These 214 cases were analysed for sensitivity, specificity and predictive value. The sensitivity was 97%; lhe specificity 100% and the predictive value 100%. There were no false positives results. In relation to lhe size of the malignant tumors lhe sensitivity was 95% for the smaller tumors (2,5 cm); 94% for size bel ween 2,5-5 cm and 100% in lhe tumors larger then 5 cm. The sensitivity of lhe melhod was related with the charactheristics of the tumor, the technique used and lhe cytophatologist experience. With lhe cytopunction aspiration we obseried Iess celular distortion and less hemorrhagics smears when compared with the aspirative cilopunction. This aspirative cytopunction is a simple, harmless and cheap technique bul training and tactile sensitivity are necessary in order to obtain good results.
