The immunoperoxidase technique was used to test specifity of CEA (carcinoembrionyc antigen) and EMA (epithelial membrane antigen) in exfoliated cells in neoplasic and reactive effusions. CEA showed specificity for tumor cells from carcinomas. EMA had positive reaction in tumor cells as well as in 6 1.5% of non-neoplastic effusions. The staining for CEA showed utility either for the differential diagnosis of reactive mesothelial cells and carcinoma cells or visualization of few isolated tumor cells among the mesothelial and inflammatory cells.
