Abstract

The present study provided a retrospective analysis of the epidemiologic profile of 124 oral cancer patients treated at Santa Maria University Hospital between 1994 and 1998. The predominam histological type was squamous cell carcinoma with 117 (94,35%) cases, being the tongue the most common site presented, in 51 (41,13%) cases. The predominam gender was male, with a ratio male: female of 4,9:1. Considering the risk factors for oral câncer, it was observed that 95 (76,61%) patients were smokers, 59 (47,58%) were alcoholics and 48 (38,70%) worn a dental prosthesis. With regard to the symptons, the most common ones were: the presence of lesions in 97 (78,22%) cases and pain in 68 (54,83%) cases. The most common treatment was the combination of surgery and radiation therapy in 57 (45,98%) cases. The data in this study supports worldpublished reports.
