Abstract

The authors review 1000 gastric cancers from biopsy and necropsy files of the Pathology Department. Medicine School, Federal University of Minas Gerais. These cases are classified according to Laurén, Mulligan-Rember/Teglbjaerg, Chun-Ming and Kubo. When there was a mixed pattern the dominant histological feature was considered for the classification. Whenever possible a correlation was made among the histological picture, sex, age. macroscopic aspect, race and evolution. The authors conclude that: 1) Kubo's classification is the best one for their material: 2) gastric cancer is more frequent in men: 3) there is no significant difference between the median age of necropsy and biopsy cases: 4) There is a good correlation between necropsy and biopsy diagnoses: 5) adenocarcinomas have a higher incidence between the 50's and the 60's, for both sexes: 6) carcinomas show a higher incidence in lower age groups (40-49's) especially in females; it is more frequent in mulato and white people; in negroes it is much less frequent: 8) it is more frequent in the antral region and pylorus: 9) stenosing forms are more common in carcinomas and ulcerated and ulcero-vegetant types are more common in adenocarcinomas.
