In the second half of 2014, a group of researchers from 16 countries met in Lyon, France, to discuss the latest evidence on breast cancer screening. The meetings were organized by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC ) and aimed to formulate a consensus on the effectiveness and the efficacy of several breast screening methods and the balance between benefits and harms in different populations. The final product of this joint work is the second edition of the Handbook on Breast Cancer Screening, published by IARC last June as part of the series IARC Handbooks of Cancer Prevention. The book updates the Handbook on Breast Cancer Screening 2002 and can be used to support the discussion on the implementation of breast cancer screening programs.
