Abstract

The comparability of morbidity and mortality statistics from diferente localities is made possible by the adoption everywhere of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases, Injuries and Causes of Death, for the use of which a Manual was issued by the World Health Onganization in 1948, after the Sixth Decenial Conference of Revision held in Paris in the same year. A portuguese translation of the Manual was published in 1952 by the Federal Service of Blostatistics, for the benefit of persons and institutions concerned with vital and health statistics in this country. Yet the International Statistical Classification consists, as a rule, in a classification of conditions by anatomical sites and this is not enough in epidemiological studies of câncer, where we feel the need of a supplementary classification by type of neoplasm. Therefore, the Section of Epidemiology of the National Câncer Service of Brazil has organized, for its own research work, a system of joint classification of neoplasms according to type and anatomical site, where a code list of types of neoplasm is used in conjunctlon with a numerical list of anatomical sites as given by the International Statistical Classification in its current form. In the preparation of the list of types preference was given to the nomenclature generally adopted by our own specialists. In the new system of joint classification by type and site, two numbers are assigned to each case: the first number is the same number of the rubric of the International Classification and, as a rule, indicates the anatomical site (and incidentally the nature, malignant or not); the second number corresponds to a certain variety in the numerical list of types of neoplasm. These numbers are written separated by a dash. For the purpose of facilitating the task of classification, this Manual oontains detailed tables which give the types or varieties of neoplasm peculiar to specified anatomical sites. The list of types of neoplasm was prepared by Prof. Francisco Fialho, Chief Patholagist of the National Instituto of Câncer, and the Manual was organized by Dr. E. Jansen de Mello, Consulting Epidemiologist of the National Câncer Service.
