Resumo

Nos recentes avanços no tratamento de pacientes com câncer, torna-se necessária a manutenção de um acesso venoso central de longa duração, através do qualé realizada a administração de agentes antineoplásicos, antibióticos, nutrição parenteral, transfusão de componentes do sangue e também a monitorização de exames laboratoriais. Além disso é importante que este procedimento seja de fácil implantação e de baixa morbidade. Os autores utilizaram o Cateter de Hickmann (um polímero de silicone com diâmetro intraluminar de 1,6mm) em 29 pacientes, com um total de 31 cateteres e com um tempo médio de permanência de 177 dias. E analisam a incidência de infecção (a complicação mais frequente) tanto local quanto sistêmica, comparando os dados com a literatura.
