Câncer como Problema de Medicina Tropical

O autor faz uma revisão crítica sôbre a ocorrência de neoplasias malignas nas regiões tropicais, comparando com os dados do seu material, obtidos na cidade tropical do Recife (8° 3’ S e 34° 51 0), Pernambuco, Brasil. Chegam às seguintes conclusões: 1) As neoplasias malignas são freqüentes nos Trópicos e regiões sub-desenvolvidas do mundo. 2) Algumas formas de neoplasia maligna são mais freqüentes nas regiões Tropicais de que nas de clima temperado. Isso ocorre principalmente com os carcinomas epidermóides, particularmente os do colo uterino, bôca, pênis e os carcinomas epidermóide e baso-celular da pele. 3) Na África e Ásia Tropical é alta a incidência de carcinoma primitivo do fígado, o que não parece ocorrer na América Tropical. 4) Na África Tropical tem sido relatada uma alta freqüência de linfomas malignos, particularmente em crianças. Para o autor essa é uma questão provávelmente sujeita à revisão. 5) O cariocarcinoma e o carcinoma do naso-faringe têm sido encontrados com alta freqüência na Ásia, particularmente na Ásia Tropical. 6) Chamam a atenção para o fato de que a maioria dos cânceres prevalentes nos Trópicos, são de fácil diagnóstico, fácil prevenção e fácil cura (dentro de certos limites de avanço da doença). São formas de câncer que tendem a diminuir ou desaparecer nos países desenvolvidos. 7) A persistência dessas formas, nos Trópicos, deve-se a situação econômico-social precária prevalente nessas áreas.
