The Author studies, from a critical standpoint, the occurrence of malignant neoplastic diseases in Tropical areas. He compares the data from different countries with his own data which comes from the tropical town of Recife (8.° 3’ S, 34.° 51’ W), Pernambuco, Brazil. He found that: 1) Malignant neoplastic diseases are frequently seen in tropical countries. 2) Some forms of câncer has a higher incidence in tropical áreas than in temperate ones. This is what happens with epidermoid (squamous-cell) carcinoma, mainly the ones localized in the cervix uteri, mouth, skin and penis. 3) In Tropical África and Tropical Asia the incidence of primary liver carcinoma is high. That does not seems to occur in Tropical America. 4) It has been reported a high frequency of malignant lymphomas in Tropical África, particularly in children. The Author thinks this point is íar from settled. 5) Naso-pharyngeal carcinoma and choriocarcinoma has been found in a high frequency in Asia, particularly Tropical Asia. 6) The writer emphazises the fact that most of the câncer types that are prevalent in the Tropics are of easy prevention, prone to carly diagnosis and gave a high rate of cure (if they are properly cared of). Such câncer types tends to decrease and to desappear in developed countries. 7) Persistence of such forms of neoplastic diseases in Tropical countries is part of the picture of poor conditions of living and medicai care in that countries.
