Cancer screening program in the Campinas area: 1968-1996

The Cervical Cancer Screening Program in the Campinas area began in 1968 by the initiative of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of the School of Medicai Sciences, Campinas State University (UNICAMP), integrating the University with community health Services. The program has expanded for 47 cities in the Campinas area, counting today with several centers of secondary and tertiary care, that are references for the Program. Based on the data from the Cytopathology Laboratory of UNICAMP, the screening coverage in 1996 was estimated. The results showed that the screening coverage was higher than 20% in 21% of the cities, it was higher than 15% in 53% of the cities and it was lower than 10% in 15% of the cities. We concluded that the screening coverage is low in most of the cities. Considering that the available data is from public health serviees, it’s possible that the coverage should be higher due the participation the private Services, which assist around 50% of the population of some cities.
