Abstract

This study addresses the following issues raised by HPV-related cervical lesions: 1) identification of the vírus in histoiogically normal appearing tissue; 2) differential morphometric changes induced by the HPV subtype in condyloma, and 3) the morphometric differences between pure condyloma and CIN 1. We used the nuclear/cytoplasmic morphometric ratio for area, length, and maximum chord pro files. Forty eight cervical biopsy slides had been classified histologically into three groups: normal (22 cases), condyloma (20 cases), and ClN 1 (6 cases). The HPV-DNA status obtained by in situ hybridization was used to study if histologically normal tissue would be recognized as HPV infected. The condyloma cases were then com pared by morphometric analysis to the HPV-DNA subtype by "in situ" hybridization in order to differentiate HPV sub-types of low and high risk. The morphometric parameters were assessed by multivariate analysis and showed to achieve a correct ciassification in ali but two cases with a very high posterior probability. We concluded that morphometric data are useful in the differential diagnosis among the HPV-related cervical lesions.
