Abstract

This article discusses the relationship between the excessive use of alcoholic beverage and the development of mouth, larynx, pharynx, esophagus, liver, intestine and breast cancer, stating the daily amount of alcohol comsumption above which it is considered excessive. Forms of cancer prevention and other problems associated with alcoholic abuse are also described, emphasis being given to the disadvantage aí concentrating this work on alcoholics, as it is the common practice. On the other hand advantages are stressed in the attempt: 1 - to avoid acquisition of the habit aí excessive use of alcohol; 2- to detect and intervene with non-alcoholic heavy drinkers. Physicians have an oustanding role in this second approach since health units are privileged places for its development. From this point of view are discussed possible impediments in our country to a work routine with the heavy drinkers by these professionals.
