Abstract

A total of 148 patients with carcinoma of the cervix, stage III, referred to the Radiotherapy Department of the Instituto Nacional de Câncer, from January 1975 to December 1979 were evaluated in order to try to establish possible prognostic factors. The extent of parametrial infiltration was found to be the most importante factor, patients with unilateral infiltration presenting a statistically superior survival rate over those with bilateral disease (p<0,005). Anemia was also of prognostic value and the hemoglobin level must be kept above 12gm. Although patients over 50 year of age did have a better survival rate, the difference did not reach statistical significance. The extent of parametrial infiltration seems to be the most important prognostic factor and should be kept in mind when designing new studies.
