We studied the contamination of ventilator circuits in order to assess the need for more frequent changes of tubing. Patients requiring continuous mechanical ventilation were studied. Samples were cultured from ventilator tube, patient and solution. We could not show any contamination of tubes by other bacteria except those isolated from patients. Our observations suggest that ventilator tubing need to be changed at 48 hours intervals.
