Abstract

Precocious toxicity syndrome (PTS) due to cancer chemotherapy (CT) is defined as the symptoms that started until 24 hours after parenteral CT, with a variable duration of few hours up to 3 or more days; each symptom varies with time and intensity according to each drug and each patient. There are 2 components of this PTS: the first is a toxic component (with a theoretical pathogenic model which involves prostaglandins and leucotríens), and other psychosocial, with a different pathogenesis; they are independent from each other in time but interrelated in other aspects. This psychic component is described here in the following aspects: antecipatory nausea and/or vomiting, psychic reactional States (anxiety and depression) and psychological aspects of anorexia of the PTS. The author demonstrates that there is a positive correlation between anxiety and PTS' intensity. He also concludes that knowledge of diagnosis, fears content and cooperation by the patient to CT do not interfere or is modified by neither PTS' intensity nor anxiety.
