Two cases of Merkel cell carcinoma are reported and the English literatura on this subject is reviewed. This neoplasm occurs in elderly patients and is gene rali y localized in the dermis, usually in the head. It is composed of small, round cells arranged in a diffuse fashion or in trabecular pattern, and exibits a variable number of mitoses. The ultrastructural and histogenetic findings of the lesion are discussed. The tumor shows low-grade malignant behavior with tendency to local recurrence and regional lymph node metastases. Surgery, consisting of local radical resection, with regional lymphnode dissection if necessary, seems to be the best treatment. Adjuvant radiotherapy has been used successfully In a few cases.
