Abstract

The authors have studied the value of exfoliative citology in the detection of oral carcinoma, in 294 cases. They present a correlation of positive findings of 85,5% of the total. In this work, they show that citology is a valuable coadjuvant in the diagnosis of cancer of the mouth. It can be used in the control of initial lesions, in patients who have suffered extensive surgerey, or who have been treated by radiotherapy or chemotherapy, and in those who refuse to undergo surgery. They claim, nevertheless, that citology by no means may substitute histopathology examinations which they feel must be compulsory.
