This study had the objective of quantify the coexistence of Hashimoto's thyroiditis and papillary carcinoma thyroid, correlating with demographic data, and previous clinical presentation and pathological anatomy diagnosis. A case series study of 347 reports patients with thyroid papillary carcinoma diagnosed at Pathology Anatomy and Cytopathology department at São Rafael Hospital from January 2000 to December 2007. Forms were filled on the cases in order to collect demographic and clinical data. The pathological anatomy examinations were diagnosed by both pathologists of the present study. The present study showed a coexistence of 31.4% of Hashimoto's thyroiditis in reports of patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma. In females, there was a total of 96 (88.1%) cases with coexistence, which shows higher prevalence when compared with cases without coexistence. The case series studied presented a frequency of 31.4% of Hashimoto's thyroiditis in cases with papillary thyroid carcinoma suggesting an association not just coincidental and that raises the possibility of a relation of cause and effect between the thyroiditis of the development of carcinoma. But further cross sectional or cohort studies are necessary to confirm this information.
