Two-hundred twenty nine patients with breast câncer treatedat Araújo Jorge Hospital between 1979 and 1988, were studied regarding the number of dissected lymphonodes. Out of those, 175 were submitted to classical radical mastectomy (CRM) and 54 to modified radical mastectomy sparing both pectoralis muscles (MRM). There were no influence of clinical staging or previous therapy on the surgical procedure. Young patients were more frequently submitted to CRM. The mean dissected nodes was higher with CRM than with MRM, 23 and 18 respectively. More than 30 nodes dissected wasachievedonly with CRM (p < 0.001). It is concluded that CRM allows better axiliary clearance when compared to MRM sparing both pectoralis muscles.
