Abstract

Between 1970 and 1997, 411 patients were diagnosed with malignant melanoma at the São Judas Tadeu Hospital, in Barretos. In 7 (1,7%) cases the tumor affected the mucous membrane and the respectives charts were analysed for the writing of this paper. There were 4 anorectal tumors, 2 vulvovaginal ones and one was in the palatal region; 6 patients were male and 1 female, with ages varying from 31 to 84 years (mean = 61 years). Only one patient had a local tumor (still alive after almost 5 years), 4 had regional disease (all died within 3 years of diagnosis), and 2 had metastases (dead wtthin a year). The treatments varied according to the stage of the disease. The data points to a poor prognosis of the melanoma of mucous memhrane, wich usually is diagnosed in late stages, in advanced and, often, with metastasis.
