Abstract

The incidence of nosocomial urinary tract infection (UTI) in 96 patients with cancer was studied. We found a great incidence of urinary infections in old male patients, contrasting with the greater incidence of urinary tract infection in younger woman. The UTI was most frequente after lower abdominal surgery, and had increased frequency when compared with other abdominal and thoracic surgical procedures. The difference concerning the etiologic agent in patients with indweiling-catheters and in patients without catheters was clear. Inpatients with O. aeruginosa and S. marcescens infections a higher risk of septicemia was observed. Propective studies will be necessary to ciarify some epidemiologic aspects of UTI in our hospital.
