An evaluation of hormone receptors in breast cancer-histochemical method. Samples from 31 malignant human breast biopsies were examined to assess the hormonal status in conjuction with the pathoiogic diagnosis. This histochemical method has allowed the study of estrogen and progesterone receptors (ER, PgR) on frozen sections by a very simple alternativa fluorescent method. Consecutiva adjacent sections were stained with hematoxylin eosin (HE) andacridine orange (AO) for Identification of the malignant cell population and pathoiogic diagnosis. Our preliminary findings indicate: 1) Of the malignant tumors, 38,7% were interpreted as positive, 12,9% negativa and 48,4% doubtful. 2) The frequency of ER and PgR was higher in postmenopausal women. 3) The infiltrating lobular carcinoma revealed high frequency of positive hormonal receptors. 4) Tumors with a prominent lymphocyte infiltration showed low frequency of ER and PgR. 5) The breast cancers were composed of heterogeneous cell populations with ER positive and ER negativa in different proportions. The authors also related observations on morphological changes and the presence of intranuclear hormone receptors.
