Abstract

Despite the advances in oncological treatment, cancer still is a grave and debilitating illness, with treatments that leave physical and emotional sequelae. Integrative medicine emerged as an approach to promote more comprehensive and patient-centered care. Officially recognized in 1962 and strengthened by international partnerships, such as the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), integrative medicine combines evidence-based conventional therapies and complementary practices. It emphasizes the doctor-patient relationship, self-care and healthy lifestyles, aiming for a better quality of life and clinical results. In the United States, over 50 hospitals have adopted this approach, integrating practices such as yoga, meditation, nutrition, and acupuncture to manage common cancer symptoms, like fatigue, pain, anxiety, and depression. Integrative medicine does not replace conventional treatment, but offers additional support, promoting a more complete and humanized care.
