Abstract

Cancer surveillance involves systematic strategies to monitor individuals at risk, to identify early signs of the disease, improve clinical outcomes and increase survival rates. Cancer registries are an essential tool of cancer control as they measure the incidence and trends of the disease, providing indicators to plan the evaluation of cancer control activities. In addition, they help the elaboration of researches recommended by the guidelines of the National Health System (SUS). The text discusses the benefits and challenges the registries face, standing out how they impact the collection and utilization of essential data for research and survival analysis. Population registries have to deal with poor integration of data and constant updating of the systems to monitor new information and technologies. Hospital registries may have to cope with consistency issues and quality of the data because of the diversity of protocols of collection and documentation. It is necessary to enhance the standardization of the data and collaboration among institutions to overcome these challenges and to improve the efficacy of cancer registries and help to maximize the potential of the registries for researches and survival of patients with cancer.
