The Authors report the case of a 53 year-old man submitted to right interscapulo-thoracic disarticulation – Berger tecnique - due to malignant cutaneous neoplasm, in 1993. The patient became addicted to opioids, used in a frustrated attempt to treat phantom limb pain. After further investigation, it was found that complains were due to phantom limb sensation and amputation stump pain, and treatment and prognosis for these are diferent than for phantom limb pain. The medical features of opiod addiction and withdrawal syndrome are addressed, as well as the use of methadone in the present medical situation.
