Abstract

Nurses, practical nurses and nurses aides handling antineoplastic in hospital units exhibited increased frequencies of chromosome anomalies and sister-chromatid exchanges (SCE) in chromosomes of peripheric lymphocytes. No correlation was found between time of exposure or protective measures and the frequency of aberrant metaphases or SCE/cell in individual 'cases, probably due to multiplicity of variables involved. However, decreased frequencies of chromosomal aberrations were found in the professional nurses comparing to the practical nurses and the nurses aides. Also, decreased frequencies of chromosomal aberrations and SCE were found in exposed individuais handling the most toxics antineoplastics in a Iow rate. These data indicate that the occupational exposure to cytostatic agents may cause damage to the DNA. Therefore, protective measures and care in handling antineoplastic agents must be further emphasized, and periodic monitoring of nurses exposed to antineoplastic agents should be reinforced.
