Four large hospitals in the city of Rio de Janeiro were surveyded in regards to the tabacco consumption within each institution. The following questions wereposed: 1) should smoking be allowed in all places of the hospital? 2) should an exclusive area be allocated for smoking? Two thousands, three hundred and ninety-nine employers answered those questions. A total of 92% were favorable to restriction of smoking in all parts of the hospital, 7% were against it and 1% did not answer. In question nº 2, there was an equal division of opinions: 54% being in favor while 45% were against creating a special area for smokers. One per cent did not reply to question nº2. One concludes that the majority of hospital employers have a well defined position against free smoking in hospital. However, the survey reveals that half of them believe that it is important to have areas where smoking should be allowed.
