The records of 13 patients with eosinophilic granuloma of bone seen at the Radiation Oncology Department of the Instituto Nacional de Câncer, Rio de Janeiro, between '1964 and 1983 were reviewed. There were 7 males and 6 females, ranging in age from 2 to 40 years with a mean age of 18 years. Follow up periods ranged from 9 months to 18 years. The solitary form of the disease was seen in 7patients and in 6 it was multiple. The most commonly affected bone was the parietal (5 patients — 38%) followed by the femur in 4 patients. All patients received radiation treatment delivered either by Cobalt 60 machine or ortovoltage X ray therapy. Tumor doses varied from 800 rad to 3000 rad. Local control was obtained in 76,5% of the patients (13/17 treated lesions). In patients under 15 years of age, 1200 rad seemed sufficient to control the disease. Local control in adults was obtained with 2000 rad. In 9 patients (69%) complete disappearance of bone lesions was achieved following radiotherapy. The mean period for bone tissue repair was 10 months (range 2 to 28 months). Only one patient died; death resulted from intercurrent disease. Radiotherapy is an effective form of therapy for eosinophilic granuloma of bone although new lesions may appear later on, even when complete healing is obtained with solitary lesions.
