Abstract

A case of Listeria monocytogenes meningitis arising in a patient with established Hodgkin's Disease is reported. Autopsy showed parenchymai, CNS disease, and pneumonia was not observed. Both total leukocyte counts in the spinal fluid and the percentage of either mononuclear or polymorphonudear cells had little diagnostic or prognostic importance. The patient was receivind corticosteroids before Listeria meningitis developed. The use of intravenous chloramphenicol during treatment resulted in prompt return of simptons. Based on those data, we recommend that patients with Listeria meningitis be treated with ampicilin and gentamicin or TMP/SMX.
