The Revista Brasileira de Cancerologia (RBC) is a milestone in scientific editing in the area of cancer control in Brazil since 1947.
Along its 75 years of life, the journal endeavored to improve the editorial processes and incorporate the concept of plurality of themes and methodological approaches produced about cancer control. It stands out the development of actions of early detection of cancer, improvement of the treatment and expansion of the offer of palliative care, further to strategies of prevention of risk factors (behavioral, environmental and occupational) and basic, clinical, translational and epidemiological investigation. Few are the journals of that nature with such a longevity in our mean.
Key changes have been implemented by RBC during its existence supporting the adoption of best scientific and editorial practices. It started to be published in Portuguese and in English, branched out to social medias, implemented the electronic platform Open Journal Systems (OJS), attributed to is articles the Digital Object Identifier (DOI), adhered to Rede de Serviços de Preservação Digital Cariniana of the Instituto Brasileiro de Informação em Ciência e Tecnologia (Ibict) and began to be published continuously.
The editorial advances of RBC have consolidated its position as a reference journal in cancerology across its multiple dimensions, broadening the access to national and international knowledge and strengthening the National Health System (SUS).
RBC encourages the open access and information sharing, further to divulging data at recognized repositories as the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) and the voluntary opening of peer-review. Today, the encouragement to practices of Open Science is becoming an international movement which advocates the transparency of submission of manuscripts, of the research databases as a new format of communicating science, eventually leading to accessible and reproducible knowledge for the benefit of the society.
