The A. makes a study of the pre and post-operative complications related to blood volume cbanges. The effects of anestbesia and surgical trauma on the patient, and their fundamental mechanisms, are analysed. In sequence the Syndrome of Depletion and the metabolic alterations of surgical trauma are studied. A critical review is made of the methods employed to determine blood volume. The method of MOORE, based on studies of body composition with radioisotopes, is presented. The A. uses the blood volumes as given by MOORE’S method, adapting them to Brazilian standards. This is done by interpolations and calculation of parcelated red cell and plasma volume, based on the hematocrits considered normal for Brazilians. The physiopathology of blood volume changes and the methods of blood reposition are summarized. A review is made of the problem of protein depletion and its influence in the healing process and the maintenance of homeostasis. In conclusion the A. points out the rules to be followed for correction blood volume deviations.
