Abstract

This opinion article analyzes the statement that e-cigarettes are 95% less dangerous than traditional cigarettes from a report that was challenged due to the fragility of its methodology and authors with conflict of interests. Recent scientific studies show that health harms to the users as cardiovascular and respiratory diseases are considerable and in many situations, comparable to conventional cigarettes. The dual use of conventional cigarettes and e-cigarettes increases damages even more. The use of e-cigarettes is connected to start smoking, aggravation of mental health and increased vulnerability to dependence among young adults. The article argues that the narrative that e-cigarettes are 95% less harmful than conventional cigarettes is obsolete and misleading and should not be used as a base for public policies. An evidence-based communication is suggested instead, prioritizing the protection of young adults and strict follow-up of nicotine products.
