Abstract

Introduction: Colorectal cancer is associated with a high symptomatic burden, which can significantly impact patients’ quality of life, especially during antineoplastic treatment. Objective: To evaluate the association between symptoms and quality of life domains in colorectal cancer patients undergoing antineoplastic treatment. Method: A cross-sectional, descriptive-analytical study was conducted with adult colorectal cancer patients undergoing treatment at an oncology hospital in Maranhão, Brazil, between October 2024 and January 2025. Sociodemographic and clinical data were collected. Pain was assessed using the visual analogue scale, and quality of life was assessed using the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire. Spearman’s correlation coefficient was used to analyze the associations. Results: 60% of participants reported moderate-to-intense pain. The most significant symptoms were pain, fatigue, and insomnia. Social and cognitive functions showed higher scores, while the physical and emotional domains showed greater impairment. There was a significant positive correlation between pain and fatigue (ρ=0.555; p<0.001) and between pain and insomnia (ρ=0.347; p<0.05). Conclusion: Pain proved to be a prevalent symptom associated with functional and emotional impairment and could form part of a symptomatic cluster with fatigue and insomnia.
