Abstract

Introduction: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw is a serious adverse side effect associated with therapy with antiresorptive and antiangiogenic drugs. Objective: To describe the clinical and epidemiological profile of oncologic patients with medication-related osteonecrosis at the “Hospital Escola da Universidade Federal de Pelotas/HU BRASIL”. Method: Observational, retrospective, cross sectional study, utilizing a convenience sample, with data collected from electronic medical charts. Results: A total of 112 patients treated between 2017 and 2024 were evaluated, 56.25% (n=63) were women and 43.75% (n=49) were men. The mean age of the patients was 64.04 (SD: ± 12.19 years). The most frequent primary tumors sites were breast and prostate. Zoledronic acid (Zometa® 4mg) was the drug used by 94.64% (n=106) of the patients. The prevalence of osteonecrosis was 19.63% (n=22) and stage II was observed in 45.45% (n=10) of the sample. The most common triggering factor was tooth extraction, accounting for 50% (n=11) of the cases. Conclusion: Among patients with medication-related osteonecrosis, there was a predominance of individuals over 60 years of age, with men being the most affected. Advanced stages of the disease were the most frequent, zoledronic acid was the most commonly administered drug, and the evaluated risk factors did not show statistically significance associations.
