Introduction: In Brazil, cervical cancer is the third malignancy among women, and eighteen thousand new cases are estimated for 2012. Objective: To analyze the development of prevention and early detection of cervical cancer in the daily care of nurses who work in teams of the Family Health Strategy, from their assignments, proposed by the Ministry of Health. Method: In this exploratory study ten nurses from Primary Care Units of one municipality in Minas Gerais were interviewed, in January and February 2011. In reflective reading, we attempted to grasp meanings, organize them into units of meaning and confront the literature on the subject to develop the analysis of qualitative data. Results: Three Units of Significance were created: In the groups, during the visit, that opportunity is unique. It is far from the recommended goal, but we were a group. We intend to do it, but there are other activities and much resistance yet. The importance of nurses' performance, their integration with the team and the community, local knowledge, establishment of a relationship and constant evaluation of results were highlighted. Difficulties in different responsibilities within the implementation and management were noted as well as the need both to motivate and facilitate the access of users. Conclusion: The systematic control and tracking of women, effective reference and counter–reference in different levels of care and adequate provision of human and material resources, proved to be relevant aspects for investing activities in order to obtain better results.
