O Câncer pode ser tratado através da oncocirurgia, da radioterapia, da criocirurgia, da imunoterapia e da quimioterapia. O que se observa é o crescente emprego das emanações na terapêutica exclusiva ou complementar do tratamento cirúrgico, tanto no pré como no pós-operatório. Os autores salientam a importância do cirurgião-dentista especializado em Prótese Buco-Maxilo-Facial trabalhar na equipe de radioterapia, pois poderá auxiliar o radioterapeuta confeccionando aparelhos destinados a orientar as emanações sobre a área a ser irradiada, bem como proteger e afastar os tecidos sãos que não devem receber radiações, através das próteses radíferas. A fim de que os cirurgiões-dentistas se familiarizem com a terminologia utilizada, os autores apresentam um glossário de termos básicos em radioterapia.
