Purpose: this study aims to understand the profile of patients with gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) treated by surgeons in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Method: a retrospective, multicenter study, implemented by the Brazilian Society of Surgical Oncology (SBCO), beginning in December 2006 and ending in December 2007, including 47 cases of GIST surgically treated. Results: it was predominantly female (29 women and 18 men) and the ages ranged from 10 to 81 years with an average age of 62 years. The stomach was the most common site of location of the tumor (44 cases), followed by small intestine (2 cases) and rectum (1 case). The most common symptoms were abdominal pain (48.9% of cases), palpable mass (46.8%) and digestive tract bleeding (27.6%). The tumor size ranged from 0.8 cm to 28 cm, with an average of 12 cm. The segmental gastrectomy was the procedure most frequently used (21 cases). The incidence of lymph node metastasis was 4.2%. The rate of recurrence was 40.4% (all cases classified as high risk GIST). Conclusion: this case shows that the profile of patients with GIST treated by surgeons in the state of Rio de Janeiro differs with some points of the reports of foreign literature, there is, however, a need for national studies with larger samples to confirm the data.
