Two strains of Candida albicans were obtained from patients with respiratory infections and were virulent for them. After incubation with human leukocytes, some clones of these strains were able to survive inside of phagocytes. The viability of the strains was maintained after 120 minutes of incubation; thus the leukocyte nonspecific defense mechanisms had limited effect on virulent strains in vitro, and this effect is maximum after 1 hour of incubation.
