Tumores Malignos da Vesícula Biliar. Revisão da Literatura e Análise de 10 Anos no Instituto Nacional de Câncer do Rio de Janeiro

The records of 19 cases of primary malignant neoplasms of the gallbladder seen at the Instituto Nacional de Cancer (1962-1972) were reviewed. All of them but one were adenocarcinomas. The female/male ratio was 3,5:1 and the lesion was predominant in elder patients. The tumor was associated with colelithiasis in 10 cases. The best results were obtained in patients with cancer discovered at surgery for benign biliary disease. Twelve cases were lost to follow-up. Early diagnosis is very difficult and we believe that any chance of improving the results seen at our series and those of the literature wiH lie in the advance of new chemotherapy protocols and in progress of propedeutic methods for early diagnosis, where surgery plays an important role.
