Abstract

From October 1982 to August 1984, 30 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of nasopharynx, stages III (26.5%) and IV (73.5%), received combined radiotherapy (6500-7000cGy/7-7.5 weeks) and chemotherapy with 5-Fluorouraci1 (750mg/m 2, continuous infusion, days 2-4), Mitomycin-C (10mg/m 2, E. V., day 1) and Methotrexate (30mg/m 2 , E. V. day 1). The median age was 40 years with 20 male patients. Lymphoepithelioma was diagnosed in 66.5% of the cases. Minimal follow up was 24 months Actuarial overall and disease free survivals at 48 months were 49% and 35%, respectively. Of 28 eligible patients, 75% achieved complete local response. Metastatic disease occurred in 31% of the cases. The number of complications was high and included mucositis (severe in 52%), xerostomia, infection (two fatal cases of septicemia). Despite the high local control rates, the little influence this played in the survival rates and the elevated number of complications lead us to not indicate the combíned treatment as a routine treatment for these tumors. A randomized study to stablish whether or not combined treatment is of value is urgently needed.
