Twenty-three cases of tumor of unknown origin are analysed. Patients were registeredat the Hospital Naval Marcílio Dias from 22.12.80 to 10.10.84. Adenocarcinoma was the predominant histopathologic diagnosis; men predominated over women In a proportion of 1,3:1. Age varied from 16 to 75 years (average = 54.1 years), 65.2 % of the patients being over 50 years. The initial presentation of the disease was made by tumor in lymph nodes, bones, mediastinum and serous effusions. The prímary tumor was defined in 12 cases (52%) and necropsy in five cases defined the origin in all of them. Lung, prostate and skin (melanoma) represented the site of the primary tumor in 50 % of the defined cases.
