Social Participation in the Development of the National Palliative Care Policy in Brazil: the Frente PaliATIVISTAS Movement

Abstract

This article reports on the role social participation in the approval of the National Palliative Care Policy in Brazil. In response to the high demand for palliative care, the obstacles to its promotion, and considering that organized educational actions combined with engaged communities can help reverse this reality, the Frente PaliATIVISTAS was created in February 2023. Following the organizational guidelines of the Brazilian National Health System (SUS), strategic actions were developed with significant societal engagement, which brought the topic of palliative care to discussions in Health Conferences and the Participatory Brazil initiative, which undeniably contributed to the publication of the National Palliative Care Policy. Health education in support of public policies, fostering the construction of a public policy through Health Conferences, was a historical milestone. Hopefully, this experience can inspire new commitments to the cause of palliative care in other countries and stimulate the growth of new social movements in defense of public policies and human rights.
